What is My Sparcline?

My Sparcline is metal Art for your desktop that is a smart Device stand

A history of a work of art and design celebrating technology within a practical personal utility experience that is sharable socially and culturally.

My Sparcline with its Real Object Alert in foreground and other art in background, including a sculpture called “Solitude” by my brother, the late Robbin Belveal.

Art for your desktop

Makes your smart phone into art. The concept is borrowed from data dashboards. A little squiggly line can say so much! about the status of a system - or about you! Like the little ziggy zaggy line on your heart monitor. Lub dub!

What’s YOUR Sparcline?

Made of solid steel. It’s VERY functional Art

What’s next?

This concept is growing to become something far bigger,.

“Art that’s functional?“

Yes. These were shown in some art galleries and shows.

“Oh really?”

There were curators who didn't feel something that served a functional purpose belonged in a gallery. Well, ----- them. I'm an Industrial Designer by education. I LOVE things that serve a useful purpose AND are beautiful. That's like the ultimate accomplishment. For that reason, I'm still proud of these cute little things.

What?

Honestly, I think the Sparcline confused people because it is functional art. It actually works well. Art that is useful? Boom. Minds blown.

Well, I know someone who won’t be getting a Sparcline of her own.

My Sparcline Heartbeat

I loved showing in the Random Art Gallery run by Brenton and Jason. Great crowds. Over the top cool!

MySparcLine: Sculpture for your smart device

This was a Kickstarter project and a lot of fun. A lot of these are out there still being used and the Sparcline appeared in several art shows and galleries.

See archived Kickstarter campaign; MySparcLine: Sculpture for your smart device

A special design honoring the pink ribbon for breast cancer. The shadow is in blue for prorate cancer.. Both have extreme personal relevance for this artist/designer.

Video from the Kickstarter campaign. Music by my friend, the incredible Violinist, Zuriel Merek.. The flame you see drawing the line is my own torch in my own hand

Making Art an Experince

Ultimately, the final art being made was the customer experience

Iterative Exploration

In the tradition of Industrial Design, the ideal took on many many iterations

I tried many interesting shapes before settling on two to go with.

A Design Theory Moment

It’s not about Detail

I hate the term, “Attention to detail”. Pink Floyd’s lyrics, “You wore out your welcome with random precision”. says it so well. Wasting time designing tree leaves in a lousy forest is a crime. Stop praising it. Let it go.

It’s in Getting to Gestalt

Get the big picture right. Then keep the ideal in focus while working to make the details support it not muddle it.

A Labor of love

Testing and retesting variations of shape and dimensions to ensure perfect fit for a wide range of devices,

Refinement

The angles and spacing had to just right to work reliably on many devices.

The most amazing feet!

My invention. Repurposing O-rings as rubber feet. I sure tried a million things before I thought of this, It is simple, easy, and works REALLY well.

Cute little o-ring performed amazing feet.
copyright R. Belveal 2013

The same O-rings also make a nice grippy cushion against the body of your smart phone (or case, just in case, it's in a case)

Why now?

I’m getting ready to launch a new thing, I am looking to resurface my Sparcline signature brand for for a new scale and scope, but with the same core concept.
