My friends at the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco (VAGF) have been doing a great job for a long time in connecting Frisco artists to opportunities and resources in the area. They’re deserving of any attentions and kudus we can give them.

This is both a tribute to The VAGF and, … Okay, I admit it, I was dying to see what their logo would look like rendered in 3D using ethernet cable. Weren’t you? Oh, was that just me?

How do you say Connections?

The Visual Arts Guild is about connections. So, it seemed fitting to use network cables. Right? And especially since COVID, virtual matters more than ever.

Art is an experimeNt

I wanted to know

The idea of the logo in 3D grabbed my curiosity because I had been sketching very similar looking things, only larger. This looked like an ideal place to try out some new methods I had in mind. So it served my technical purpose very well.

More Cable? Yes!

I have many more ideas in mind for this method and materials. I'm actually an industrial designer by education and obsessing over methods and materials is what we do.

The connection

I haven’t stopped being an experience designer. So when I make art, I am really interested in what thoughts and experiences it stirs in the audience.  Do people feel a connection?  What is it and why?  To delve into that is way more interesting than just do people "Like" it.

This explains why I tend to pick subject matter that has some meaning to people already, I love images that are iconic and play some social role and purpose. 

Why i love Sculpture

We are Sculpture

This highlights some of the reasons I choose sculpture over 2D mediums. I love 2D art in all of its forms, painting, photography, etc. But there's something about an object that shares your space.  We are 3D creatures with physical substance and so is it.  There's a comradery. 

It’s alive

It never looks exactly the same way twice. Different lighting, location, times of day, shadows, reflections, angles of view - its always changing. Sometimes, just a glance is powerful.  Sometimes shadows are the star.

Simply irresistible

And watch with me, Tell me if you don't see: People cannot resist touching it.  (And I design with that in mind) .

Weight fOr it

And people want to feel the weight. They'll nudge it sideways or give it a little lift just to feel that satisfying weight. And then watch them get a vey slight smile.  :-) That's fun to watch. 

Solid relief

Even when we look at photos of real sculpture, we get a feeling that we have touched something real.  For an over-digitized culture, touchable sculpture is welcome “relief.”
